Wolves manager Nuno claimed that he is proud of his players after they secured a crucial victory over Southampton in the EFL Cup.

The big spending Championship outfit were the underdogs coming into the game, but there was a doubt whether the club would focus on the league campaign over the EFL Cup. After spending heavily in the summer, Wolves are targeting a return to the Premier League and the club suffered a major blow in their objective after suffering a 2-1 loss against Cardiff City during the weekend. It enabled the Cardiff, one of their promotion rivals, to get ahead in the table.

Southampton were always going to focus on the domestic campaign after the arrival of Mauricio Pellegrino as the new manager. The club did not do well in the Premier League last season and suffered as a result with several managerial changes. There has also been doubts about players staying at the St Mary stadium. Wolverhampton Wanderers are going through a different mentality, as the club has seen different unable to come to the Molineux stadium over the last few months.

It appears that manager Nuno is still not happy with the squad and may bring in more names in the next few days. However, he was happy with the much changed outfit coming up with a positive result against a higher league position.

"I'm really proud of them.It was fantastic work. It was a tough game, we knew that, the way they prepared themselves meant a fantastic job today.I felt we were ready to compete. We had a good game plan, a good idea, we studied Southampton.Southampton had good chances but the first moments of the game were completely ours, we had three good chances,” said Wolves manager Nuno after the League Cup match.
