WOLVES TARGET BENJANI

Wolverhampton Wanderers and two other clubs are targeting Manchester City striker Benjani. The Zimbabwe international joined the Citizens in 2008, but after failing to make a significant impact at the Eastlands club he was packed off on loan to Sunderland.

However, the temporary switch to Wearside proved to be underwhelming, as the forward failed to score a single goal in the Premier League during his time at the Stadium of Light.

On his return to City, the 31-year-old was released as a free agent, and he is now free to talk to any club he chooses.

Now The Mirror reports that Blackburn, West Ham and Wolves are competing with each other for the striker’s signature.

All three clubs including Wolverhampton Wanderers are in the hunt for a forward to bolster their respective attacks.

WOLVES SNAP UP VAN DAMME

Wolves have made their first summer signing with the capture of Belgium full-back Jelle Van Damme from Anderlecht.

Van Damme moves to Molineux on a three-year deal with an option for a further 12 months after the two clubs agreed an undisclosed fee for the 26-year-old. Manager Mick McCarthy was pleased to have snared Van Damme, who has experience of life in England having played for Southampton in the 2004/05 campaign.

“Jelle is a player we’ve been watching for a long time and I’m delighted we’ve managed to sign him,” said McCarthy.

The Wolves boss continued: “He is a versatile defender who can play in several different positions and also boasts Champions League experience with Anderlecht and 22 international caps with Belgium.

“Playing in the Premier League is going to be a new challenge but from talking to him it’s one he is clearly looking forward to and relishing.

“There were other clubs who were keen to sign him but we were able to get in early and register our interest and get the deal done.

“The fact that Sportingbet.com — a global, very successful brand — has decided to extend their deal with a full season still to run on their contract, is a huge endorsement of our football club.

“It bucks the trend in football, where many clubs are either struggling to retain their sponsor or to secure one at all.”
