Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Cesar Peixoto has highlighted the qualities of teenage loanee Sean Neave after the 19-year-old made his first start for the club in the Carabao Cup defeat to Everton.
The Newcastle United forward joined Wolves on a season-long loan deal on the final day of the summer transfer window. Peixoto singled out Neave’s attitude and drive as key attributes that stand out in a squad already featuring established strikers Raul Jimenez and Adam Armstrong.
Speaking after the match, Peixoto said: “He’s hungry to be successful at this club and in his career. He has quality and a lot of potential, but it’s the hunger I want, because it’s difficult to find a third striker with Raul and Adam, to come to this club and it’s difficult to play because we have Raul and Adam. He is a young player with hunger and Sean has the hunger I want in my team.”
Neave’s opportunity came at a time when Wolves were preparing for a packed schedule either side of the international break. The youngster, an England youth international, has been working his way through the ranks at Newcastle and now faces the challenge of adapting to regular senior football in the Championship.
Wolves sit fourth in the Championship table after seven games, with 14 points and a game in hand. The club are aiming for an immediate return to the Premier League following last season’s relegation. Adding depth in attack remains important, especially with the demands of a 46-game league campaign plus cup ties.
Neave’s arrival provides competition and fresh energy. His loan move allows him to gain experience away from St James’ Park while giving Wolves a player who can develop under Peixoto’s guidance. The Portuguese coach has already shown he values players who demonstrate the right mentality alongside technical ability.
The forward’s debut start against Everton offered a glimpse of what he can bring. While minutes may be limited behind the first-choice strikers, Peixoto’s public endorsement suggests Neave will be given chances to prove himself when opportunities arise.
This focus on hunger and potential reflects the club’s approach to squad building in the Championship. Young talents like Neave can grow into important contributors if they embrace the demands of the division.
Wolves fans will be watching closely to see how the teenager progresses. His integration into the first-team environment could prove valuable both this season and beyond, particularly if he can translate his promise into consistent performances when called upon.
